Round the County
(With apologies to The Night Pat Murphy Died)
The night they dreamed up Round the County Is a night I’ll never forget
‘Twas a Northwest blow and the drinks did flow when they came up with a bet
The nights were long and the tourists gone so what are we gonna do?
We got our boats and plenty of dough, so all we need is crew!
That’s how we show our respect for one another,
That’s how we show our honor and our pride
We’ll brave the waves, fight the tide and try to be a winner
We’ll race on down the county and, back up the other side
Well Betsy knew she had a chance, but she said “I really do think
Even with good boats and crew, we’ll be lucky if no one sinks”
All the guys they disagreed, and they winked at one another
So with a grin she drained her glass and bought them all round.
Chorus
We’ve got big boats and little boats, and all have something in common
You can’t do a race for two full days without some things going wrong
There’s buried rails and blown out sails, and rudders gone awry
Well, I can’t steer so you better make clear, we’re gonna get cross that line
Chorus
Fool us twice, fool us thrice, I guess we never will learn
A chance to crew in the RTC is something we all yearn
Now it’s been well over 30 years, and we keep on coming back
Well life’s no dress rehearsal, there’s no place we’d rather be
